Soil

Soil is not dirt.

Soil

1 part clay to 1 part sand to 1 part compost.

Compost

We make our own soil on campus, using the BROWN and GREEN garden waste that the garden crew cleans up from the grounds each day.

  1. Start with a small layer of sticks at the base of the pile.
  2. Add a layer of brown waste, about 30mm deep.
  3. Add a layer of green waste, about 30mm deep.
  4. Add a sprinkling of soil over these two layers, about 5mm deep or less.
  5. Have some one watering this pile as you build it. Well watered, but not running wet.
  6. Now for the next layers.
  7. Add a layer of brown waste, about 30mm deep.
  8. Add a layer of green waste, about 30mm deep.
  9. Add a sprinkling of soil over these two layers, about 5mm deep or less.
  10. Rinse and repeat.
  11. Continue building up the pile, keeping it well watered till it is about a meter high.
  12. Cover to stop evaporation of the water from the compost pile.

Our piles are built to be about 1 meter by 1 meter by 1 meter, then the bugs and microbes come along and have a great party of things and over six weeks this pile ends up being only 10% the size of the original size.

We turn the pile every week at least, moving the outside to be the middle of the new pile and the insides to be the new outsides. As you turn the pile have some one watering it so that it again good and damp.

When ever you turn the pile you will see how much life is in the compost pile, how hot it gets as everything does it's job to turn the waste in to compost.
